Description
The Village School is a school building constructed between 1910 and 1912 by Parker and Unwin for the Joseph Rowntree Village Trust. It is made of brick and features a French tile roof. The main structure has cross wings at either end and a central cross wing at the rear. All classrooms are oriented south towards the village green. The building includes lavatories and washrooms within the main structure. It is a single storey with attics, consisting of 9 bays, with the outer bays projecting in a gabled design. The central entrance has a glazed door beneath a radial fanlight, flanked by wide, three-quarter length plate glass windows that were originally designed to fold back. The gable ends have 3-light casements, and there is a central bellcote along with ridge stacks. This building is significant in the evolution of school architecture, as it features "open air" south-facing classrooms that do not open off the assembly hall, which was a common design in 19th century schools, along with internal sanitary facilities.
