Description
38 and 40 Gillygate is a house that has been converted into two shops and a flat. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of brick and features a pantiled roof.
The exterior consists of two storeys. On the ground floor, there are shopfronts with pilaster strips that have sunken panels, a painted fascia board, and a central doorway leading to the flat, flanked by glazed shop doors. On the first floor, to the left, there is a glazing bar sash window with a rubbed brick flat arch. To the right of this window, there is a blind recess with a similar arch. On the far right, there is a sashed canted oriel window topped with a dentilled cornice. Above this, an attic dormer features casements and a flat roof. The gutter is supported by rectangular timber brackets, and there are gable chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
