Description

A pair of early 19th-century houses, later used as shops and flats, located on Gillingate in York. The houses are built of buff brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with timber shopfronts and central brick stacks projecting through the front and rear roof slopes. Number 86 has a skylight at the rear.

The two-storey, three-bay front of the houses is symmetrical. Number 84 has a shopfront framed by pilasters, topped with a plain cornice and incorporating gabled terminal blocks. The shopfront features a glazed and panelled shop door, and an altered side door recessed to the right of a window, beneath a segment-arched opening. The shop window is of plate glass, set over a sunk panel riser. Number 86 has a shopfront with plain pilasters and a sloped fascia between grooved terminal blocks. The shop door is glazed and panelled, positioned to the right of a plate glass shop window over a plain riser. To the left end of Number 86 is a four-panel door with a fanlight above. Central blind window recesses are present on both the first and second floors. Number 84 features a 16-pane sash window on the first floor and a squat, one-pane sash window on the second. Number 86 has a four-pane sash window on the first floor and a squat, six-pane sash window on the second. Stone sills and segmental brick arches are present beneath all windows and recesses.

The interior has not been inspected.
