Description

A terrace of five houses with attached garden gates and railings, built around 1865, and subsequently altered. The houses are constructed of red and grey brick in a Flemish bond pattern and feature a cornice of three stepped courses of moulded glazed brick. Brick stacks with glazed brick cornices rise above a slate roof. The garden gates and railings are of cast iron.

The front of the terrace has a symmetrical 10-window façade. Each doorway has a cambered head beneath a nailhead moulded hood, with architraves and reveals of moulded glazed brick, and a recessed six-panel door with an overlight. To the right of each door is a two-storey, three-light canted bay window with chamfer-stopped mullions, painted stone sills, and billet-moulded cornices of glazed brick. The windows to number 1 have been altered, but numbers 2 to 5 retain their original four-pane centre sashes between single-pane sashes. Small casements have been inserted to the left of the bays on the first floor. On the second floor, window openings are segment-arched, with painted stone sills; some retain original four-pane sashes, while others have been altered to casements. The interior of the houses has not been inspected.

The garden railings, raised on a retaining wall and steps on the north-east side of South Esplanade, are remnants of a 13th-century Franciscan Friary that previously stood on the site. The garden gates are turned and spear-headed, with twisted standards topped by bulbous finials.
