Description

The Windmill Hotel, located on Blossom Street in York, is an inn dating primarily from the late 17th century, with significant additions and alterations in the mid-18th century and early 19th century, alongside later additions around 1890. A remodelling occurred in 1994. The building is constructed of brick, with some rendered areas, and incorporates timber-framed internal partitions. The roofs are a mix of pantile and slate.

The original block, situated on the northeast corner of Blossom Street and Queen Street, features two parallel roofs with gables facing Blossom Street. It has two-storey, canted bay windows facing Blossom Street, each with plain tiled roofs and horizontally divided sash windows. A small sash window is located within the gable above the left-hand bay window. Gable finials and scalloped bargeboards are present. A doorcase with panelled pilasters sits between the bay windows on the ground floor. An addition, likely built shortly after 1735, extends southwards, also facing Blossom Street. This section features a bowed window on the ground floor, with three sash windows, and two sash windows on the first floor. Number 16 adjoins to the south, dating to around 1820, and is constructed of mottled brick with a slate roof. It is three storeys high and two bays wide, with bowed sash windows featuring panelled friezes on the first floor and glazing bar sashes on the second. A late 19th-century timber shopfront, with three pilasters and brackets to the fascia, occupies the left-hand ground-floor section, with a 20th-century glazed door. A carriage entrance with an elliptical arch and double timber doors is positioned to the right. A modillioned timber cornice gutter incorporates a lead hopper and downpipe.

A stable range of similar date to Number 16 stands to the rear. A parallel range, dating to approximately 1890, borders Queen Street and encloses the rear yard. The interior was not inspected. Chimneys are located on the gables of Number 16 (the two to the right, in front of and behind the ridge), towards the rear of the left-hand ridge of the northeast block, and on the right-hand return wall to Queen Street.
