Description

The Railwaymen’s Club and Institute, located on Blossom Street in York, began as two houses and a warehouse, constructed in 1789. The building was altered in the early 19th century and again in 1934. It is built of painted brick with a slate roof. The exterior presents three storeys and five bays. The windows are largely sash windows, although the ground and first-floor windows in the fourth and fifth bays are glazing bar sashes. A continuous timber entablature runs above the ground floor of bays one to three. This entablature features a fillet with continuous guttae, supported by a pilaster on the left and paired pilasters flanking the entrance. The entrance is recessed with 20th-century doors, but it originally provided a carriageway. Three low, partly blocked cellar entrances are visible on the left side. A lead rainwater hopper and downpipe is positioned to the right of the third bay. The building has a dentilled and modillioned cornice gutter. The left-hand gable shows a chimney with a truncated cap in front of the ridge, and an axial chimney is located on the ridge between the fourth and fifth bays. The interior of the building has not been inspected.
