Description

This is a set of three limekilns located approximately 350 metres south-east of The Cliff House in Barrow upon Humber. They date from the 1830s and later and are constructed from hand-made red brick, partially covered by earth. The kilns are arranged in a line, spaced 4 to 10 metres apart in a quarry bottom, with their flue entrances facing west into a sheltered U-shaped hollow.

Each kiln features a brick-built, open-topped, bowl-shaped 'pot' that measures about 3 metres in diameter at the mouth and is approximately 3 metres deep. At the back of each kiln, there is a square-ended, round-arched draw-tunnel that stands around 1.5 metres high and can be up to 2.5 metres deep. This tunnel includes a recessed segmental-arched draw-hole beneath a segmental relieving arch. The southern kiln has additional brick facing on either side of the tunnel entrance and a small triangular-headed opening about 30 cm high near the inner end of the tunnel.

These kilns are likely of the intermittent type and provide an interesting contrast to the later and larger continuous kilns found in the neighbouring quarry to the west. Together, the kilns in these adjacent chalk quarries illustrate the advancements in scale and technology within the lime industry. They are also significant as the only known surviving examples of this type of kiln in Lincolnshire and Humberside, from the many that were operational in the region last century.
