Description

Welholme is a house dating from the early 18th century, with later alterations and additions from the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of brown brick, which is colourwashed on the front, and features a pantile roof. The original layout consists of a single room plan with an end-lobby entry that has since been blocked, and a staircase located behind a massive stack. The building is two storeys high and has two windows. It has a stuccoed plinth and a stepped brick eaves band.

The street front includes a doorway to the left with a stone step leading to a panelled door that has a plain overlight. To the right, there is a 19th-century four-pane sash window set in a segment-arched opening, complete with a stucco lintel and keystone. There is also a blocked doorway to the right. On the upper floor, there are two smaller 19th-century sash windows in segment arches, each with stucco lintels.

The left and right returns of the building feature steep tumbled brick gables. At the rear, the garden front has a 19th-century lean-to addition with three windows that have been replaced with late 20th-century casements.

Inside, the house retains its original plan form. The main ground floor room has a boarded door leading to the original winder staircase beside the stack, while a later addition includes a staircase with turned newels. The roof consists of a four-bay clasped purlin structure with deep collars. This house is a rare surviving example of a local style of early 18th-century two-storey single-room-plan house associated with the south Humber Bank area. Notably, it is the only known survivor with an end-lobby entrance plan, which is a rare feature in North Lincolnshire.
