Description

Silver Cottage and Whitegates is a house and barn that have been converted into two houses. The house features a datestone inscribed with "MMW," while the barn dates back to 1672, although it has likely been altered since then. The buildings are constructed from roughly-coursed limestone rubble, with a brick front on the house that is colourwashed on the left side for Whitegates and rendered on the right side for Silver Cottage. The gables and stacks are also made of brick, and the roof is covered with pantiles.

The structure is single storey with an attic, comprising five bays for the house and one bay for the barn. There are steps leading to two 20th-century doors. The right end of the house features a 12-pane sliding sash window, while the left end has a 20th-century casement window in its original opening. There are two central adjoining casements that are likely in an enlarged original opening. Above these windows, there is a two-course brick band that is raised to the left over the door and datestone. The barn has a single casement window with glazing bars and a blocked breather slit.

Silver Cottage has a pair of 20th-century raking dormers, while Whitegates has a single sloping dormer. The building has central and end stacks, and the gables are brick-coped, with the barn's gable undergoing reconstruction at the time of the last survey. Inside, Silver Cottage retains its original ceiling beams.
