Description

The Hollies is a mid-to-late 18th-century house with adjoining stables. The house is constructed of squared limestone with a brick plinth and chimney stacks, topped with a pantile roof. The stable has a brick front and gable, with coursed limestone rubble to the rear, also covered by a pantile roof. The building is laid out in an L-shape, incorporating a central entrance hall, a front wing, a rear wing, and a stable extension.

The house is two storeys high with an attic, and has a symmetrical three-bay front. A plinth runs along the base. The central entrance has a panelled door with a three-pane overlight, set within a 19th or 20th-century panelled surround featuring an architrave. Flanking the entrance are 12-pane flush sashes with stone sills. All windows are topped with wedge lintels, incised to resemble brick and showing traces of original red paint. Stone-coped gables feature shaped kneelers, and there are blocked pointed attic openings. The left return side has an entrance in the angle, with a fielded-panel door and three-light sliding sashes with glazing bars beneath wedge lintels.

The adjoining stable is two storeys high with five bays. The entrance, widened in the 20th century, has sliding doors, with a segmental arch above marking the original opening. Small casements with glazing bars are positioned on either side of the entrance, alongside two 20th-century casements; the right-hand end obscures a blocked doorway. All stable windows are set within segmental brick arches. The first floor features five oval openings framed by brick surrounds, all with wooden panels—the three on the left have circular perforations. Inside the house, fielded-panel window shutters are found in the front section.
