Description

Scarborough House is a house built around 1775 for Lord Scarborough, featuring a mid-19th century front porch, a rear extension, and various internal alterations. The house is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with scored jointing and has ashlar dressings on the porch. It has a pantile roof and is L-shaped in plan, consisting of a central entrance hall with two rooms at the front and a rear kitchen wing. The building is two storeys high with an attic and has five symmetrical bays.

The entrance features a part-glazed panelled door set beneath a lintel in an enclosed porch that has a plinth and an embattled parapet. The windows are 12-pane sashes in flush wooden architraves, topped with keyed stucco cambered arches and projecting cills. There is a moulded and finely-dentilled brick eaves cornice, and the stone-coped gables have shaped kneelers. The end stacks are prominent, and the gable ends feature pointed attic sashes with Gothick glazing. The right return of the house includes a 3-light casement and an unequal sash, both with small panes, as well as a 12-pane sliding casement, all beneath segmental brick arches.

Inside, the house retains its original open well stairs with a ramped and wreathed handrail and plain balusters, fielded-panel doors, and 19th-century plasterwork and chimney pieces.
