Description

The stable and dovecote, located southeast of the Manor House, was built in 1853, as indicated by a datestone. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with red brick dressings and was formerly colourwashed. The building has a pantile roof and a rectangular plan, positioned at right angles to the street with its front facing east. It is two storeys high and features two symmetrical openings on the first floor. The lower section has a rubble plinth and rounded brick quoins. A central plank half door is set within a segmental-arched brick surround, flanked by two blank openings that were formerly glazed. There are three small rectangular ventilation slots and two circular iron tie-bar ends above the door. The first floor includes two boarded openings, one of which has a row of five dove-holes. The eaves cornice is stepped and dentilled, and the gables are edged with brick, featuring stone coping and shaped kneelers. The left side of the building, which faces the road, has a pair of iron tie-bar ends and a blank first floor opening with the datestone above. Inside, the first floor contains a full range of tile-built nest boxes, each with an arched opening and a narrow ledge for birds to alight on. This structure is a notable example of dovecote construction that was once common in Winteringham.
