Description
The stables and threshing barn, located approximately 20 meters south-west of Coleby Hall, date from the mid-17th century, with later extensions and re-roofing occurring in the late 18th to early 19th centuries. The structure is built of coursed ironstone rubble, featuring ashlar and brick dressings, and is topped with pantile roofs. It is L-shaped in plan, consisting of a stable range with a barn at right angles.
The stables are single-storey with an attic and comprise 12 bays, divided into two sections of six bays each. The earlier section on the right has ashlar quoins and two entrances: a plank stable door (with the lower half missing) to the right in a moulded ashlar surround, and a board door to the left in a chamfered ashlar surround. Each entrance is flanked by two single-light ashlar windows with ovolo moulding in chamfered reveals. The adjoining stable to the left features a plank stable door on the right in an ashlar surround with a carved keyed lintel, flanked by single-light ashlar windows. There is also a stable door to the left (with the lower half missing) flanked by windows that have 20th-century rendered surrounds. The windows in the early section have iron bars, and most are equipped with later part-glazed wooden ventilators. The building has a dentilled brick eaves cornice, and the roof slopes to the right.
On the right return, there is a first-floor two-light ovolo-mullioned window in a chamfered reveal, which has inserted casements with glazing bars. The adjoining threshing barn forms the left return and consists of five bays. It features a blocked original wagon entrance under an elliptical brick arch, with an inserted plank door beneath a segmental brick arch, and pairs of ventilation slits on either side. The barn also has a dentilled brick eaves and a hipped roof.
