Description

28 and 30 Low Street is a farmhouse that has been divided into two houses. It dates from the 17th to 18th century and was altered and raised in the mid-18th century, with a later rear outshut and an extension to the right. The earlier section is made of coursed limestone rubble with brick gables, while the later part is constructed in brick. The roof is covered with pantiles. The building has a central entrance hall plan and is two storeys high with an attic, featuring three symmetrical bays. There is a brick plinth, and the entrance consists of a part-glazed panelled door with a plain overlight, set beneath a stucco flat arch. The windows are 12-pane flush sashes, also with stucco flat arches and cills, and there are two 20th-century dormers. The building has end stacks. Inside, there is a notable mid-18th-century open well staircase with a closed string, a moulded handrail, and column-on-vase balusters with square knops. The ground floor features roughly chamfered spine beams, with the beam to the left having cyma stops, and there are fielded-panel doors.
