Description

Number 1 and the adjoining range to the right, which is at the rear of Number 21 Market Street, is a house that includes a shop, along with a former coach-house and stable that are now used as a store. This building dates from the early 19th century, with a shopfront that was added in the late 19th to early 20th century. It is constructed from squared limestone with brick dressings and stacks, topped with a pantile roof.

The building is two storeys high and has six bays. The left side features a four-bay house that incorporates the shop, while the right side contains the coach-house and stable at the rear of Number 21 Market Street. There is a rounded brick angle on the right side that steps out at the first-floor corner. A 20th-century door is located to the left of the centre, flanked by a shopfront on the left that has pilasters supporting a frieze, cornice, and hood. To the right of the shopfront are two 16-pane flush sash windows beneath stucco flat arches.

On the right side, there is a segmental-arched carriage entrance with a brick surround and a small segmental-arched ventilation hatch at the right end. The first floor features four 12-pane sliding sash windows to the left under timber lintels, along with a plank door and two breather slits to the right. The roof is hipped.

The left return of the building faces Market Street and is adjacent to Number 21 (Weir House). It has a 16-pane sash window on the ground floor and a 6-pane casement window on the first floor, both under stucco flat arches. This building is included for its group value.
