Description
Low Risby Farmhouse is a farmhouse with origins dating back to the 18th century or earlier, featuring a south front added in 1813 by William Fowler of Winterton for Robert Holgate. The building has undergone later 19th and 20th century alterations, including the addition of a rear entrance porch. The front is constructed from squared limestone rubble with brick dressings and has a pantile roof. The layout is T-shaped, with a central entrance hall at the front and a rear wing that incorporates a former cottage. The farmhouse is two storeys high with three symmetrical bays.
The entrance features a Doric doorcase with pilasters that support an open dentilled pediment, and there are 20th century two-leaf glazed doors beneath the original radial fanlight set in the reveal. On either side of the entrance, there are ogee-headed ashlar niches designed for bootscrapers. The ground floor has 12-pane sash windows, while the first floor features 19th century four-pane sashes, all adorned with stucco cambered arches and projecting sills. The roof is hipped, and there is a central stack at the rear.
On the right side of the building, the rear wing contains a 17th to early 18th century two-light ovolo-mullioned ashlar cellar window set in a chamfered reveal. Inside, there is an open well closed-string staircase with a moulded handrail, column-on-vase balusters with square knops, and a moulded dado. The front rooms feature cornices and beaded-panel doors and window shutters.
