Description
The Kirton in Lindsey War Memorial is a limestone structure unveiled in 1920, dedicated to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars. It features a plain obelisk mounted on a square plinth with a rusticated three-stepped base. Each side of the plinth has an inscribed marble plaque flanked by engaged pilasters beneath a dentilled cornice. The front (east) plaque reads: ‘FOR GOD / FOR KING AND COUNTRY / TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY / OF THE MEN OF / KIRTON IN LINDSEY / WHO DIED IN THE / GREAT WAR / 1914 – 1919’, while the side plaques list the names of the fallen. The rear inscription states: ‘THIS MONUMENT WAS / ERECTED BY PUBLIC / SUBSCRIPTION SEPT 26TH 1920’. The south side includes a plaque at the base of the plinth with the dates of the Second World War (1939-45) and names of eight fallen soldiers. The memorial is set on a poured concrete path and surrounded by metal railings, which were replaced around 2010. It is prominently located on the village green at the intersection of Northcliff Road and King Edward Street.
