Description

The Grove is a house with origins in the 18th century, featuring alterations and additions from the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of rendered brick, designed to resemble ashlar, and has a concrete tile roof. The building has an approximately rectangular shape, with a central entrance hall on the south front that leads to a rear left wing containing two rooms (originally three) and a later addition at the angle.

The house is two storeys high and has four first-floor windows. It features a plinth and banded rustication on the ground floor. A flight of three stone steps leads to a recessed two-leaf fielded-panel door, which is framed by a raised surround with a moulded pediment. The ground floor has recessed sash windows with margin lights and sandstone sills. Above, the first floor has a moulded band and similar windows with recessed panels below. The eaves are stepped, and there are axial and end stacks.

The left return of the building has four bays with similar windows, while the right return features three 12-pane sashes on each floor. Inside, the house contains 18th-century chimneypieces that were added in the 1920s. The chimneypiece on the ground floor right is made of carved pine with fluted pilasters, acanthus capitals, and a Gothick frieze with floral decoration. The left side has a chimneypiece with a central panel and festoons in the frieze, and the rear left features a white marble chimneypiece with fluted pilasters, carved urns, and green marble insets in the frieze.
