Description

The Laurels is a house with origins dating from the late 17th century to the early 18th century, featuring 19th-century re-roofing and alterations to its openings, as well as an extension from the 18th to 19th century. The main section is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with a slate roof, while the extension is made of yellow-brown brick with a pantile roof. The building has a double-depth plan with a central entrance hall and an extension to the right. It stands two storeys tall and has three symmetrical bays.

The entrance features a 19th-century Doric doorcase with a panelled door and a three-pane overlight set in a panelled reveal. The windows are 12-pane sashes with channelled and keyed stucco cambered arches, and there is a three-course band at the first floor level, along with an eaves board and a hipped roof with end stacks. The extension includes a board door and a 20th-century casement window beneath segmental arches, with a brick coped and tumbled gable.

On the garden front of the main block, there is a panelled door with a three-pane overlight, and 12-pane sashes in flush wood architraves beneath painted rubbed brick arches. The interior retains original features, including a single-flight closed-string staircase with a moulded handrail and bulb-on-vase balusters, a pair of arched cupboards at the rear with pilasters and keyed archivolts, and three fielded-panel doors.
