Description

The George Hotel dates to the 18th century and has been altered since. It is constructed of colour-washed roughcast with machine tile roofing. The original building is two storeys and attics, featuring four flush windows with rusticated lintels and hung sash windows with glazing bars. There are three windows on the ground floor. Two gables are present, ornamented with fake half-timbering. The doorway is framed by Roman Doric half columns and an entablature with a modillion cornice. A later north wing has a ridge tile and fake half-timbering to its gable. This wing contains five three-light mullion windows above a single window of eight lights, along with two shop fronts dating to the late 19th century. The south elevation incorporates Venetian windows and an oriel. The George Hotel, along with its former stable block and numbers 7 to 17 (odd) forms a notable group, with the stable block of local interest only.
