Description

Folly tower and adjoining gateway, built around 1859, with the gateway partly rebuilt in the late 20th century. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings and is designed in the Gothic Revival style.

The tower is square in shape and approximately 6 metres high, featuring an arched gateway on the north side. It consists of two stages, with a chamfered plinth and pointed 4-centred arched openings on each side, supported by chamfered jambs. There is a buttress on the west side. The upper stage has a moulded dentilled brick string course and pairs of lancet openings on each side. The tower is topped with a Lombardy frieze, a moulded brick modillioned string course, and a coped embattled parapet.

The wide 4-centred arched gateway is attached to the north side, flanked by square piers with chamfered plinths, chamfered jambs, a keystone, and a stone-coped crow-stepped gable. The interior has not been inspected.

This folly is located in the former garden of No. 23 Bargate, built in a style and with materials that match the house. It is now part of a late 20th-century housing development and is included for its group value with No. 23 Bargate.
