TA2608NE BRIGHOWGATE 699-1/26/22 (West side) Folly tower and gateway approximately 15m east of No.23 Bargate

GV II

Folly tower and adjoining gateway. c1859, with gateway partly rebuilt in late C20. Red brick with stone dressings. Gothic Revival style. EXTERIOR: square-section tower approximately 6 metres high, with arched gateway on north side. Tower of 2 stages. Chamfered plinth, pointed 4-centred arched openings to each side with chamfered jambs. Buttress to west. Moulded dentilled brick string course to upper stage with pairs of lancet openings to each side. Lombardy frieze, moulded brick modillioned string course, coped embattled parapet. Wide 4-centred arched gateway attached to north side, with square piers with chamfered plinths, chamfered jambs, keystone, and stone-coped crow-stepped gable. INTERIOR: not inspected. A folly in the former garden of No.23 Bargate (qv), built in matching style and materials to the house. Now incorporated in a late C20 housing development.
