Description

The garden walls and gateways to the former County Court and Police Station, now known as the Coroner's Courthouse, were built in 1902 by HC Scaping of Grimsby for Lindsey County Court. The structure is made of red brick with composite stone dressings and is designed in the Edwardian Freestyle.

The section facing Brighowgate features a moulded plinth and a coped dwarf wall with remnants of iron railings. The main entrance is marked by tall, square-section rusticated piers that include stone bands, a cornice, and an obelisk finial, which has housings for former lamp brackets. To the right, there is a secondary entrance with rusticated piers, a cornice, and a plain cap. A similar pier is located to the far left at the street corner.

An adjoining section of wall along the south-east boundary has panels of coped walling that rise between eight square piers with moulded caps. Between this wall and the courthouse, there is a passage with entrances at both the front and rear. The front entrance features a board door beneath a moulded segmental arch with an elaborate keystone, while the rear entrance has a shaped arch that supports an ornate cast-iron lamp base.

These structures are included for their group value as part of a collection with the Coroner's Courthouse and the sections of garden wall to the north, which are now part of the garden of No. 36 Brighowgate.
