Description

The war memorial in Grimsby is a cenotaph built in 1923. It is made of Norwegian white marble and stands on granite steps. The memorial features three steps leading up to a rectangular shaft that is approximately 5 metres high and consists of two stages. The base has a moulded plinth, while the tall tapered first stage is adorned with relief carvings of flags and wreaths on alternating sides, along with brief inscriptions in both Latin and English commemorating the First and Second World Wars. The upper stage is designed as a chest-tomb, which has a moulded plinth, panelled sides, a moulded cornice, and a blocking course.
