Description
The former toll house and shop, now a house, is located at No. 45 Bargate Cottages in Grimsby. It dates from the late 18th century, with a later 19th-century shop front. The building is constructed of brick and rendered on the street front, with a gable facing the street.
The exterior features two storeys with an attic and includes two first-floor windows on the gable end. There is a plinth and a segmental-headed entrance to the left, which has a six-flush-panelled door. The former shop front to the right has a partly blocked window with glazing bars, framed by Ionic pilasters, an entablature, and a hood. The first-floor windows are 2/2 and are set beneath segmental arches, with a similar window in the attic. The right side of the building has a single 6/6 horizontal sliding sash window on the ground floor and a 2/2 first-floor hung sash, both beneath segmental brick arches. The building features stepped brick eaves and raised brick-coped gables.
Inside, the ground-floor front room has a fireplace with a stone surround and a cast-iron grate, flanked by alcove cupboards with half-glazed doors.
