Description

Cast-iron milepost dated 1826

The milepost is situated on the eastern verge of the unclassified road from East Ravendale to Wold Newton. It is a triangular shaft with facetted sides and a cusped top panel. The raised letters of the north-west side read: 'WOLD NEWTON, M 0 F 2’, the south-eastern side reads: 'GRIMSBY, M 8 F 3’, and the cusped top panel reads: ‘LOUTH M 4’. The name of the location of the milepost is identified in raised lettering at the base of each of the facetted sides and reads: ‘WOLD NEWTON’. The rear of the milepost displays the date and the location of the manufacturer of the milepost as ‘Thorncliffe Iron Works 1826'.
