Description
The Thatched Cottages, also known as College Farmhouse, is a house dating from the 17th century that was extended, renovated, and encased in 1979-80. It features a timber frame encased in brick, with a rendered upper section above a brick plinth. The building has a thatched roof and is L-shaped in plan, with the entrance located at the rear angle. The front range consists of three rooms with three main bays of timber frame and intermediate wall posts, along with a 20th-century wing to the rear right. It is a single-storey structure with an attic, displaying three windows on the front. The windows are 20th-century replacements, comprising two-light sliding sashes with glazing bars and a small single-light casement to the right. There are three gabled dormers with casements, and the roof is half-hipped with decorative ridge capping. The house has axial stacks positioned to the left and right of the center. Inside, the exposed oak framing includes main and intermediate wall posts with braces connecting the main posts to the tie beams and wall plates. The first floor is supported by stop-chamfered spine beams and side rails that are pegged and housed in the wall posts.
