Description
The Isis Oil Mill silo is an oil mill silo built in 1912 by Gelder & Kitchen of Hull for Wray, Sanderson & Co. It is a reinforced concrete structure with brick cladding and concrete and faience dressings. The roof is steel framed and features a glazed clerestory and ventilators behind a parapet. The silo is designed as a square tower with four stages and six by six bays, featuring shallow buttresses that rise to the full height. The corner buttresses are topped with pedimented niches and domes. One corner has a square brick pedestal that supports the water tank. The top stage includes six windows on three sides, while the name of the mill is displayed in white tile on the fourth side. Inside, the silo is divided into square storage bins with concrete floors supported by cast-iron columns. This silo is the earliest surviving oil mill silo in Hull and represents a significant change in the architecture associated with the oilseed industry.
