Description
The River Hull Railway Bridge and operating cabin is a railway swing bridge that spans the River Hull, built around 1885, with some additions made in the mid-20th century. It features a riveted steel lattice trussed bowstring span supported by a central roller pivot on round cast-iron posts that create a hollow pier. At the north-east end, there are two panelled brick pedestals with stepped caps. Adjacent to these pedestals is a square operating cabin that has two stages plus a basement. The cabin is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings and has a flat roof. The basement is channelled and rusticated, topped with an ashlar cornice. On the north side, there is a round-arched doorway with a Gibbs surround and multiple keystones made of brick. Above this, the first stage is panelled with rusticated quoins and features a round-headed window to the north. The upper stage, which is plain brick from the 20th century, has a window to the west and a blocked window to the north. The bridge is complete and currently in use.
