Description
The headstone to William Newmarch, located in Sculcoates Cemetery, was erected in 1854 and is made of sandstone. It features a rectangular shape with a rounded top, accompanied by a low stone surround and a footstone. The inscription pays tribute to William Newmarch, who devoted 21 years of his early life to defending his country during the Peninsula War. He passed away on June 25, 1865, at the age of 83. The inscription also mentions his wife, Ann, who died in April 1855. The headstone includes relief carvings of a laurel wreath, a rifle, and a bayonet, which are in slightly damaged condition. Additionally, it displays the battles and honors of the 20th Regiment of Foot, including Maida, Landyke, Egmont op Zee, Sandhils, and Wilhelmstadt on the left side, and Egypt, Vimiera, Corronna, Walcheren, Pyrenees, Badajos, and Alexandria on the right side.
