Description
Wilmington Swing Bridge is a swing railway bridge, now serving as a footbridge, that spans the River Hull. It was built around 1870 and 1905 for the North Eastern Railway and was converted and restored in 1991. The bridge features arch-topped riveted wrought-iron girders that form the span, supported by a roller bearing central pivot. There are remnants of a footway on the north side. Above the center of the bridge, there is a riveted post and beam structure with a railed platform that supports a wooden cabin, which has matchboard cladding and a hipped lead roof. On the west side, there are four large glazing bar windows. At the south end, a projecting porch is accessible via 20th-century steel steps. The north end features a canted wooden oriel window on the left and a two-light glazing bar window on the right. The bridge operates using a mechanism located in the cabin that engages with a ring gear on the pivot, and this mechanism is complete and operable.
