Description
The Gateway to Pearson Park is a cast-iron structure built in 1860 by Young & Wood of Hull, designed in the Classical Revival style. The main central arch is flanked by single pedestrian entrances, although the gates have been removed. The central archway features square piers adorned with scrolled openwork panels, pedestal bases, and Corinthian capitals. On the inner side of the piers, pilasters support a moulded round arch that includes a keystone and decorated spandrels. An enriched entablature with a cornice is broken forward over the piers. The outer sides of the piers have pilasters with cartouches displaying the city arms above. Each side has two panelled square piers leading to the pedestrian entrances, complete with corner pilasters, plinths, and cornices. Each entrance is topped with a dolphin foliate finial, which was formerly topped with a lamp.
