Description
The west block at Christopher Pickering Homes is a group of almshouses, now serving as old people's homes, built in 1952. The structure is made of brick with ashlar dressings and features a plain tile roof that has two gable stacks and a single ridge stack, all of which are coped. It has a plinth and quoins, and its style is similar to the nearby almshouses constructed in 1914. Designed by J H Hirst, the building is single-storey and has a four-window range.
In the center, there is a parapeted triple bay with a central triangular pediment and an inscribed panel below it. The entrance consists of two close boarded doors flanked by single four-light stone mullioned windows. Adjacent to this are small loggias with two round-arched openings, each covering a two-light window and a door. Further along, there is another four-light stone mullioned window, followed by a door. This building is included for its group value.
