Description
The Hull and East Riding Museum is a former corn exchange, originally dating to 1885 and designed by Bellamy & Hardy of Lincoln. It was converted into a museum in 1925 and largely rebuilt around 1950 after sustaining wartime damage. The building is constructed of brick with an ashlar front, the roof being largely hidden. It is designed in a Classical revival style and features a plinth, lintel, and sill band, a modillion main cornice, and a similar cornice to the attic storey. A pierced coped balustrade tops the building.
The museum has two storeys plus a basement and attics, with a three-window range. A projecting central entrance bay rises through the two floors, containing a round-arched opening with a mask keystone and sculpted spandrels representing agriculture and prosperity. Corinthian half-columns flank the entrance, and a margin-glazed fanlight sits above. Well-designed wrought-iron gates, inscribed with the architects' names and the date, are present. Either side of the entrance are tripartite casement windows on each floor, with stone mullions. Small, balustraded balconies are supported by brackets beneath the first-floor windows. Three round-arched windows punctuate the attic storey, each with a moulded head and keystone, and a detached inner stone ring. The central attic window is flanked by enriched square double columns and brackets that support breaks in the crowning entablature, culminating in pedestals and urns. A half-round centre panel displays the arms of Hull, topped with an anthemion. The interior was substantially rebuilt around 1950.
