Description
The Statue of William de-la-Pole, created in 1870 by sculptor William D Keyworth, junior, is a Grade II listed monument. It features a white marble statue set on a red granite pedestal and plinth, with a limestone base.
The statue depicts William de-la-Pole as a bearded figure in the Gothic Revival style, dressed in a hooded cloak, a fur-edged tunic, and hoses. He wears a belt and dagger, along with his Mayoral Chain of Office, which is visible beneath his cloak, showcasing the three-crown crest of Kingston upon Hull. The cloak is draped over his right shoulder. He stands against a truncated column, with his right hand resting on his hip and a scroll in his left hand.
The statue has experienced erosion due to acid rainwater, resulting in the loss of some details. It is elevated on a classically moulded pedestal and plinth, which are set on a moulded base. The front panel of the pedestal is inscribed with information about Sir William de-la-Pole, noting his titles and achievements, including his role as the first Mayor of Hull from 1332 to 1335 and his death on April 21, 1366. The front panel of the plinth states that the statue was presented to the Corporation of Kingston upon Hull by Alderman Robert Jameson, who served as mayor during 1870-1873.
