Description
The Central Dry Dock, located at Southend Wharf on Humber Street, is a dry dock that was originally built around 1820 and later extended around 1875 for ship repair. It is constructed of ashlar stone with some concrete repairs. A long battered breakwater wall runs along the west side of the River Hull, which is topped with a later brick wall. The dock features a pointed end to the north and has stepped sides made of ashlar, with some areas patched in concrete. There are 20th-century iron gates at the south entrance. This dock was initially built for Gleadow's Shipyard and was used for constructing new wooden boats before being extended to accommodate the repair of larger iron ships.
