Description
The statue of King William III, along with four flanking lamps, is located in the Market Place of Kingston upon Hull. The equestrian statue was created in 1734 by Peter Scheemakers and is larger than life-size, depicting the king in Roman dress. It stands on a rectangular ashlar pedestal that features a cornice and an iron guard rail. An inscription on the front reads, "This statue was erected in the year 1734 to the memory of king William the third our great deliverer," and below this inscription is a drinking fountain. The statue is set on a stepped oval base that includes four pedestals, each with plinths and cornices, supporting cast-iron globe lamps. The lamps were made in the late 19th century by King & Peach of Hull.
