Description
The K1 telephone kiosk located in Market Hall dates from around 1921 and has undergone renovations in 1990 and 2018. It is constructed from painted concrete and features a wooden door with glazing bars, as well as a tent roof adorned with four enamel signs that read "TELEPHONE." The roof is topped with four iron scrolls and a spearhead finial, and it has a moulded cornice. The sides and door of the kiosk have two panels below and three panes of glazing above, with the smaller upper and lower panes separated by central glazing bars. The rear wall contains two large blind panels, and the door is fitted with an inset brass handle.
Historically, the original design included a simple ball finial on the roof. In the mid-1920s, the Post Office experimented with adding signs and ironwork to the roofs of K1 kiosks, but these designs were not widely adopted. Instead, in 1927, the K1 was redesigned with a new glazing pattern and different roof signage and ironwork. From 1929, this updated roof signage and ironwork were retrofitted to K1 kiosks of the 1921 design, such as this one. Currently, only about a dozen K1 kiosks remain in existence.
