KINGSTON UPON HULL TRINITY HOUSE LANE K1 telephone kiosk in Market Hall
18/02/87
GV II
Telephone kiosk of around 1921, renovated 1990 and 2018. Painted concrete with wooden door and glazing bars and a tent roof with four enamel signs reading "TELEPHONE", and topped with four iron scrolls and spearhead finial. Moulded cornice. Sides and door have two panels below and three panes of glazing above, the smaller upper and lower panes divided by central glazing bars. Rear wall has two large blind panels. Door has inset brass handle.
HISTORICAL NOTE: the original design had a simple ball finial to the roof. In the mid-1920s, the post office experimented with adding signs and ironwork to the roofs of K1 kiosks, but none of the designs was favoured. Instead, in 1927 the K1 was redesigned with a different glazing pattern, and different roof signage and ironwork. From 1929 this roof signage and ironwork was retro-fitted to K1s of the 1921 design, like this example. Only around a dozen K1 kiosks now survive.
