Description
Nos. 1, 2, and 3 Whitefriargate, including No. 2 Trinity House Lane, are four houses that have been converted into shops. They were built between 1829 and 1830, with some changes made in the mid-19th century and further alterations in the late 20th century. The buildings were designed by Charles Mountain Junior for Hull Trinity House. They are constructed of brick with a granite plinth and ashlar dressings, and the roof is not visible.
The structure features two gable stacks and has a ground floor cornice, moulded eaves, and blocking, along with a cornice at the rounded left corner. The buildings rise to three storeys and have a window arrangement of seven by three, with three windows on the rounded corner. There are seven plain sashes, and above them, seven 6-pane sashes, all topped with brick flat arches.
On the ground floor, there are two late 20th-century shop fronts, with the left one returning along Trinity House Lane and featuring plastic fascias. The rounded corner has three plain sashes, with the central one having a glazing bar toplight, all adorned with cornices on consoles. Above this, there are three 6-pane sashes with moulded surrounds. The left return to Trinity House Lane has similar window styles to the main front, with plain sashes on the second floor.
These buildings are part of a cohesive design by Mountain that includes Nos. 1 to 9 Whitefriargate.
