Description

The Humber Dock and swing bridge and lock at the south entrance is a dock, now functioning as a marina, which was established in 1809. The swing bridge dates back to 1846 and has undergone later 19th century and late 20th century alterations. The rectangular basin measures approximately 250 meters by 100 meters, featuring rounded corners and slightly battered ashlar retaining walls, which have largely been rebuilt in brick above the water level. The top is finished with rounded stone coping.

Late 20th century cast-iron bollards are connected by chains along the dock. The lock measures approximately 50 meters by 10 meters and has slightly battered ashlar retaining walls with rounded coping. There are shaped recesses on either side where the bridge swings open. Each end of the lock features steel gates and concrete abutments, also from the late 20th century.

The swing bridge is a two-span cast-iron cantilever structure that accommodates both road and rail tracks, and it is adorned with wrought-iron railings. The struts create a central arch when the bridge is closed, and roller bearings are located at the pivot end. The cast-iron drums that house the gearing and hand cranks for operating the bridge are inscribed with "Haigh Foundry Company, Wigan 1846."

To the south of the lock, the walls of Humber Dock Basin extend east and then south, connecting Humber Dock Marina to the River Humber. These walls are also made of slightly battered ashlar with rounded stone coping. A late 20th century cast-iron post and rail fence runs along the north and part of the east wall, while the east wall at the southern end is topped with a late 20th century brick wall.
