Description
The former Railway Dock, now a marina, features a connecting channel and swing bridge built in 1846, with some alterations made in the late 20th century. The bridge was constructed by Beecroft, Butler & Co of Leeds, and the Haigh Foundry Co. of Wigan. The rectangular basin measures approximately 220 meters by 50 meters and is surrounded by slightly battered ashlar walls with rounded coping. There are several cast-iron bollards present. The late 20th-century additions include cast-iron balustrades and railings. At the eastern end, the connecting channel to Humber Dock has ashlar retaining walls with rounded copings and corners, as well as recesses for the bridge to swing into. The swing bridge itself has two spans made of cast iron, forming an arch when closed, and features roller bearings at each end. The cast-iron drums house the gearing and hand cranks that operate the bridge by engaging with a toothed sector. Additionally, a late 20th-century lifting footbridge now spans the channel.
