Description

Swale House, now used as offices, is located on Cottingham Road at the University of Hull. Built between 1909 and 1913 by the architectural firm Crouch, Butler & Savage, the house features red brick construction and a hipped plain tile roof with two large coped ridge stacks. The building is two storeys high with attics and has a three-window range. The central window is a wooden two-light casement, flanked by two similar four-light windows. Above, there are three hipped dormers, each with two-light casements. The entrance includes a wooden doorcase with pilasters and shaped brackets supporting a segmental hood, leading to a fielded six-panel door. On either side of the entrance, there are canted brick bay windows with parapets and twelve-pane sashes.

The boundary wall consists of a low brick structure approximately 100 meters long, featuring gabled ashlar coping and intermediate piers with stepped ashlar caps. At the right end of the wall, there is a gateway with concave walls and square piers that have moulded caps and coping. Additionally, there is a pair of square brick gatepiers with rebated corners and flat ashlar caps, along with a wooden gate and a corniced canopy.
