Description

University halls of residence and offices, constructed between 1909 and 1913 by Crouch, Butler & Savage. The buildings are primarily brick with ashlar dressings and have slate hipped and mansard roofs, featuring six panelled, coped stacks. The central block is flanked by wings and features projecting end pavilions.

The main block has a hipped centre, four storeys, and three-storey parapeted side bays. It includes a tall, four-light cross mullioned window at the centre, flanked by side bays with tall stone surrounds, keystones, and sixteen-pane sash windows on each floor. Above these are checkerboard panels and a Diocletian window with a keystone. The ground floor features a stone doorway with pilasters, flanked by small single-light windows, and beyond, canted stone bay windows with cross casements and latticework balconies. A continuous lintel band runs across the facade, topped by a swan neck pediment embracing a three-light mullioned window with an open pediment and double keystone.

The flanking wings, two storeys plus attics, incorporate five twelve-pane sash windows to the first floor and attic dormers, with sixteen-pane sashes below set within round-arched recesses and double keystones. The parapeted end pavilions have a single sash window on both the ground and first floors, and a square, latticed window above with a moulded surround.

The left return features a projecting central bay flanked by polychrome pilasters with cornices and a stepped parapet. A French window with overlight is located on the first floor, with a similar configuration above, including a wrought-iron balcony. Square latticed windows are positioned on either side. A full-width projection below features a balustraded balcony and a central porch with two Tuscan columns in antis, flanked by canted bay windows with cross casements. The entrance has central, glazed double doors with an overlight.

Milner Hall, located at the rear, presents an identical facade. The ranges are linked towards the south end by a single-storey corridor with a lattice balustrade, central glazed double doors with an overlight, and flanked by three windows, each within a round-arched recess and featuring double keystones. The three-storey returns of the corridor have five windows on each floor, with projecting single end bays including first-floor fire escapes.

A low brick wall with stone coping and central steps, flanked by curved walls, links the end bays. The steps incorporate matching balustrades and square pedestals with ball finials.
