Description

The University of Hull Wharfe Building and attached gateway were constructed between 1909 and 1913 by Crouch, Butler & Savage. Originally the College of Education, the building now serves as university offices. It is constructed of brick with ashlar dressings, and has slate hipped and mansard roofs, surmounted by eight panelled coped stacks.

The main central block is flanked by wings and features projecting end pavilions. The central block has a hipped roof, four storeys, and three-storey parapeted side bays. It has a three-window range, with quoins, a third-floor sill band, and swept parapets. A tall, four-light cross-mullioned window sits in the centre. Above this are tall stone surrounds with keystones, and sixteen-pane sash windows on each floor. Above again is a checkerboard panel and a Diocletian window with keystone. The ground floor features a plain stone doorway flanked by single-light windows, and canted stone bay windows with cross casements and latticework balconies. A continuous lintel band runs along the facade. Above the doorway is a swan neck pediment embracing a three-light mullioned window with an open pediment and double keystone.

The flanking wings are two storeys high with attics, featuring five twelve-pane sashes to the first floor and attic dormers. Below are sixteen-pane sashes, interspersed with round-arched recesses and double keystones. Parapeted end pavilions have a single sash on the ground and first floors, and above, a square latticed window with a moulded surround.

The right return has a two-storey central entrance bay with a stepped parapet, flanked by polychrome pilasters with cornices. A French window with overlight sits on the first floor, above which is another French window with a fanlight and wrought-iron balcony. Square latticed windows are positioned on either side. The ground floor has a full-width canted projection with a latticework balcony and a central porch with two Tuscan columns in antis, flanked by single canted stone bay windows with cross casements. A central glazed double door with an overlight provides access.

A gateway connects the Wharfe Building and the University Library. Its central opening is flanked by square polychrome gatepiers with plinths and cornices. Short coped walls extend outwards, each containing a round-arched pedestrian gateway with a keystone and blank fanlight.
