Description
The Burton Fleming War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite and features leaded inscriptions. The memorial is situated on the triangular village green outside the church of St Cuthbert, at the junction of Hunmanby Road and Front Street.
The structure consists of a simple granite Latin cross raised on a four-stepped base. The inscriptions are leaded, with the south face of the plinth and steps stating: "ROLL OF HONOUR / A.M.D.G. / IN LASTING MEMORY OF THOSE BRAVE MEN / FROM THIS PARISH WHO LAID DOWN THEIR / LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918 / (NAMES)." The east face commemorates: "AND IN MEMORY OF / THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES / IN THE WAR 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES)."
