Description

The gates, lodges, and flanking walls at Sledmere House were likely built in the late 18th century, designed by Samuel Wyatt and Sir Christopher Sykes for Sir Christopher Sykes, 2nd Baronet. The gates, created in 1813 by Watson and Pritchett of York for Sir Mark Masterman Sykes, 3rd Baronet, feature later additions and alterations. The outer wall is made of red brick, while the rest is constructed from gault brick with ashlar dressings and topped with Welsh slate roofs. Wrought-iron gates are included in the design.

The outer walls extend approximately 20 meters to the east and 30 meters to the west of the lodges, with gault brick walls that curve around the lodges. The lodges are approximately square in shape with additional ranges on the sides. There are three sets of double gates, with the central set being wider and flanked by ornamental piers topped with tritons. The gates feature four levels of rails, lancet finials on the bars, curvy dogbars, and arched braces.

The lodges are similar in design, standing two low storeys high on the sides. The west lodge has a basement on the right return and a single bay. The plinth is visible, and the entrances to the inner returns are partly blocked, featuring fielded-panel doors with divided overlights under flat arches made of gauged brick. Above these doors are two 9-pane unequally hung sashes set under flat lintels.

On the street facade, there is a central elliptically arched recess containing a tripartite window, which includes a 12-pane sash flanked by two 8-pane sashes, all with ashlar aprons. Tuscan columns and responds support the frieze above. The arch has been infilled with brick, and there are ashlar cornices and blocking courses present. The roofs are hipped, with central stacks.

The gault brick walls, which have an ashlar plinth and flat copings, stand approximately 2.5 meters high and end in square piers with peaked copings. Additional walls, also about 2.5 meters high, feature brick copings. There is an elliptically arched entrance in the wall to the west, located about 10 meters from the lodge, and the wall to the west returns to Gardener's Row.
