Description
The Villa is a house built in the late 19th century, designed by John Birch for Sir Tatton Sykes, 5th Baronet. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond and features a plain tile roof. The building has two storeys and three bays, with the central bay projecting forward and topped with a gable, while the outer bays are set at a 45-degree angle and have additional ranges at the rear.
The house has a central hallway plan and a plinth with moulded brick copings. There are two steps leading to the central entrance, which consists of a board door with an integral fanlight, framed by a 4-centred surround made of rubbed brick and topped with a cavetto-moulded hood that has label stops. To the right of the entrance is a casement window in an ovolo-moulded surround with a moulded sill, set under a flat arch of gauged brick and also featuring a cavetto-moulded hood.
Each side of the five-sided canted bay to the right has 2-light cross windows in similar surrounds, while the left bay has a 4-light window. The first-floor bays slightly jetty out, with the outer bays displaying an ovolo-moulded first-floor band and the central bay featuring a dentil band. The first floor contains 2- and 3-light multi-paned casement windows, all with similar surrounds to those on the ground floor. The hoodmoulds above the left and centre bays are stepped. The left and centre bays have gables with dentil-moulded bargeboards and drop finials, while the right bay has a hipped roof.
The house has side and rear stacks. Inside, there is an oak staircase with a Jacobethan-type balustrade, four-panel doors, and some original fireplaces.
