Description
The Former Post Office and Post Master's House, built around 1890, features later additions and alterations. Designed by John Birch for Sir Tatton Sykes, the fifth Baronet, the building is constructed of reddish-orange brick in English garden wall bond with a plain tile roof. It has an approximately T-shaped plan with an infill to the rear. The structure includes a single bay range and a single bay cross wing to the right, which is a single storey with an attic in the gables.
A chamfered plinth is present, and the entrance leads to a central gabled porch, featuring a board door with glazing at the top, set in a four-centred, moulded surround beneath a hoodmould with label stops. Above the door is a decorative blind oblong recess under a hoodmould. The gable has a dentil barge board. To the left, there is a three-light window that incorporates a "GR" post box, with rubbed brick sills in an ovolo-moulded surround under a flat arch of rubbed brick and a dripmould. To the right, a four-light window with wooden ovolo-moulded mullions is set in an ovolo-moulded surround, also under a flat arch of rubbed brick, with a moulded drip and sill. A similar three-light window is located in the gable, which features decorative barge boards. The building is topped with paired octagonal flues on a large ridge stack.
