Description
The gates, piers, and walls at Sledmere House, connecting the stables to the Triton Inn, date from around 1700, with the gates having been brought from Venice in the 19th century. The walls are from the late 18th century and feature later additions and alterations. Constructed from pinkish-red brick, they have tile and ashlar copings along with wrought-iron gates. The gateway includes square end piers topped with ashlar copings and ball finials, leading to a curved wall that rises towards the inner piers, which are also square and capped with ashlar. The ornamental double gates display a scroll and ribbon motif at the bottom, with bars adorned with scrolls on the sides and an ornamental overthrow now part of the gate. From the westernmost pier, the wall extends southeast for about 75 meters, standing approximately 1.75 meters high with tile copings, and connects to the rear of the Triton Inn.
