Description
The stables and carriage house to Sledmere House, now used as garages, workshops, and tea rooms, were likely built in the late 18th century and have undergone later additions and alterations. The building features a yellow brick front facade in Flemish bond, while the rest is constructed from reddish-pink brick in English garden wall bond, with ashlar and red brick dressings, topped by a Welsh slate roof. It is square in plan, arranged around a central courtyard, and exhibits a Neoclassical style.
The structure is two storeys high with four bays, featuring a central entrance to the inner courtyard that is pedimented. An ashlar plinth supports a central round-arched opening that reaches full height under a portico, which is adorned with engaged Tuscan pilasters and columns—two on each side—along with a frieze and a moulded pediment that contains a clock. Flanking this entrance are two round-arched recesses, each with part-glazed double garage doors, while the first floor has six-pane windows with ashlar sills. The building is capped with a hipped roof and a central cupola, which includes a bell, Tuscan columns, a frieze, a dome, and a weather-vane.
Inside the courtyard, there are mainly round-arched stable openings with plank doors, overlights featuring glazing bars, round arches made of red gauged brick, central keystones, and ashlar imposts. The first floor includes casement windows and pitching doors set within elliptically arched openings. The eaves are stepped and cogged.
