Description

The Tithe Barn is a 16th-century threshing barn with an adjoining horse-mill, located on the west side of Easington High Street. The barn features timber framing with brick walls and a thatched roof, while the horse-mill is constructed of brick with a pantile roof. The barn has five internal bays and includes opposed wagon entrances to the central bay, which are fitted with double board doors and flanked by pairs of slit breathers. The roof is half-hipped, and the gable ends also have pairs of slit breathers. There is a central board door at the north end, with a similar door above it, and a 20th-century casement and board door at the south end, which is below a section of tumbled-in brick.

The horse-mill is six-sided, supported by stone-coped brick piers with later infilling, although the machinery has been removed. Inside the barn, the posts rest on 20th-century rebuilt pedestals and are connected to wall plates with braced ties. The structure features braces to tie beams and arcade plates, with two tiers of collars and clasped purlins. The arcade plates exhibit stop-splayed scarf joints with vertical bridled butts and face-keys. This barn is a rare survival with much of its framing largely intact. It is also designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Humberside No 187.
